Staying safe abroad

When you’re planning your holiday or a trip overseas, it’s important to think about what could happen, especially in an emergency situation. You’ll already have lots on your mind – what you’re going to do that day or where your friends are, but it’s also important to keep both you and your belongings safe.

Make sure you stay safe abroad with these tips:

  • Get travel insurance – becoming ill or injured overseas and having to come home early can often ruin your trip, not to mention the medical bill you could be presented with afterwards. Protect yourself, with medical expenses cover on a travel insurance policy.
  • Avoid dark or non-tourist areas at night- keep yourself safe and only use lit, busy areas if you’re travelling alone.
  • Keep your money or valuables in more than one location.
  • Don’t use bags with thin straps or accessible pockets.
  • Don’t bring attention to yourself as a tourist – especially when travelling alone or in a small group, as this could make you a target.
  • Keep your family and friends posted on your itinerary.
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended.
  • Lock everything – lock your accommodation up, your windows and doors, hide everything inside and make sure you have a good lock on your belongings.
